Junkanoo has taken on a whole new meaning here on our beautiful islands. Even the tiny tots are now dressing in costumes and moving to the sounds of the junkanoo beat.

Over the past few years, school administrators have

been encouraged by the Bahamas Ministry of Culture to participate in end of year competitions with other schools, dubbed “Junior Junkanoo”. On December 16th school children from all over Eleuthera came together and put on a spectacular performance for a crowd of locals and visitors.

The high schools vied amongst themselves and the primary did likewise. Much effort was put into creating their individual costumes, and the day of the parade was filled with excitement as they gathered in Governor’s Harbour to ‘rush’ for their individual groups.

The energy was invigorating as the youngsters rushed to the junkanoo beat. It was a fabulous parade, and everyone had a grand time! Junkanoo is definitely here to stay.
